Somewhat ahead of schedule we’re taking on some shared hosting customers.
Our plan had been to build a special VM to use as a shared hosting platform after we work on the server at the end of the month, but events overtook us and now I’ve discovered that the shared hosting strategy I came up with – but never used – when I first deployed this server actually works pretty well.
Migrating customer data by hand is never fun, but I don’t have time to write and test a script to do it for me – and don’t trust an untested script to not break in some subtle and devious manner.
And I’ll need to do it all again after we build the dedicated VM and install a commercial shared hosting control panel system.
Still, despite being a lot of work, it’s also rewarding to see a system get used – especially when you thought it was destined to be sidelined. Fortunately, this additional work isn’t taking time away from other projects as everything is otherwise pretty much stalled pending hardware work and an OS reinstall.
